Research and Scholarship Competency

Artifacts of Research and Scholarship Competency

Artifacts 1-2 were completed in COUC 740 Advanced Research Design:

Artifact 1: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Certification

Completion of the requirements for this graded artifact demonstrates an understanding of the design and evaluation of research proposals for a human subjects/institutional review board review and ethical and culturally relevant strategies for conducting research (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.l.). Additionally, this course reviewed emergent research practices and processes (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.d),

Artifact 2: Quantitative Research Proposal

This artifact used a multivariate, quantitative, between-group experimental design to explore the effect of CBT and MI therapy on problematic pornography use. These artifacts outline my ability to develop a thorough literature review that meets professional writing standards (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.g), develop research designs appropriate to quantitative research questions (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.a.),  as well as utilize appropriate instrumentation for this study (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.e and CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.f.), and write at an appropriate level for professional publication (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.h.).

Artifacts 3-4 were completed during COUC 745 Advanced Multivariate Statistics:

“The purpose of this course is designed to help students acquire an advanced understanding of research design and statistical techniques necessary to not only understand and consume the scientific literature in and around the field of counseling and community care but to also produce a high-quality doctoral dissertation that meaningfully contributes to the scientific literature.“

Artifact 3: Model Rationale

This artifact required the creation of a model for a study and demonstrated competency of this with instrument design models and methods (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.e.).

Artifact 4: Analysis Portfolio

For this assignment, I completed various statistical analyses to showcase my comprehension and competency in using SPSS and reading the results. This artifact required competency in the use of univariate and multivariate research designs and data analysis (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.b.).

Artifact 5 was completed during COUC 750 Qualitative Research Methods:

“Qualitative research helps advance our understanding of effective solutions to the complex problems addressed in counseling. Therefore, counseling doctoral students need to understand qualitative methods of inquiry and when and how to use them. This course promotes an understanding of the main qualitative research methods and their application to the counseling field. Selected qualitative research methods are explored, appropriate problems for qualitative inquiry are delineated, and rigorous, ethical, and effective qualitative research strategies are applied to problems addressed in the field of counseling. “

Artifact 5: Thematic Analysis

This qualitative research proposal explored how substance abuse counselors integrate their knowledge of effective substance abuse treatment coupled with their initial comprehensive clinical assessment of clients to determine the appropriate course of treatment for participants in opioid treatment programs with medication-assisted treatment. This artifact demonstrated competency for research designs appropriate to qualitative research questions (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.a), and qualitative designs and approaches to qualitative data analysis (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.c).

Artifacts 6-8 were completed during COUC 810 Dissemination of Research and Scholarship in Counseling:

“This course offers an orientation to writing and disseminating presentations and publications to the field of counseling in a variety of venues. Principles of research and scholarly writing are reviewed, and skills are emphasized that provide readiness for manuscript preparation, submission, review, editorial, and presentation processes. “

Artifacts 6-8: Disordered Eating PowerPoint Presentation and Handout that were utilized to submit a Disordered Eating Presentation Proposal for the Black Mental Health Conference in Florida. These artifacts demonstrate the competency necessary to prepare a professional conference proposal (CACREP Standard: 6.B.4.i).

Artifact 9: CSI Chapter Grant Application

As the chapter President for Rho Eta Sigma, I completed a grant application to obtain funding to support the growth of our chapter. The application was successful and the grant request was approved. This artifact demonstrates competency in grant writing (CACREP Standard 6.B.4.k).

 Research and Scholarship Reflection:

  1. Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?

    • The process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency has been daunting but rewarding. Entering into the program at Liberty, I was very nervous about the research requirements and I felt concern that I would struggle in this area. After being able to work with Dr. Volk, I found a new appreciation for statistics and research. During the second course I took with Dr. Volk, I had colleagues reaching out to me to help them understand their statistical analyses and it was then that I realized that I had a leadership capacity within research which has been very impactful on my self-image and has impacted me personally and professionally.

  2. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?

    • An area of strength that I have developed while in this program in this area of competency is a greater understanding of research analysis. I enjoy reading SPSS output and it has sparked an interest in me for further research. My intention is to use this strength to secure a position in a research facility where I can continue to learn and grow in my depth of understanding of research.

  3. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?

    • An area of challenge is my lack of research publications. I plan on connecting with peers and faculty members in the future to seek opportunities for publications and improving this area as I desire to develop excellence in this area.
