Research and Scholarship Competency
Artifacts of Research and Scholarship Competency
In COUC 740 Advanced Research Design, I began the process of competency in quantitative research methods. Despite not previously having much interest in research, I committed to extending my knowlege and diving into the process. While in this course, I began to fall in love with research and data collection. After completing the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Certification I felt more confident in my ability and knowledge of ethical research. As the class continued on, I developed my ability to review literature and a system for maintaing the data, as evidenced by this Citable Units Assignment. Through this procedure, I was able to complete a Quantitative Research Proposal for the course entitled Problematic Pornography Use Treatment and the Effectiveness of CBT and MI.
These artifacts provide evidence of master level competency for the following competency: a, g, h, j, and l.
Continuting to learn about quantitative research became desireable for me and I eagerly anticipated COUC 745 Advanced Multivariate Statistics and Quantitative Research. In this course, the professor provided a dataset that we were able to manipulate using SPSS software and I found this to be very instrumental in my development of competency. During this course, I was tasked with creating statitical analysis on the moderation of the effect of narcissim on body shame by age depending on gender. Prior to conducting anaylsis, I created a Model Rationale which outlined my proposed model and hypotheses. Next, I conducted an Analysis Portfolio in which I completed various statistical analysis to showcase my comprehension and competency of using SPSS and reading the results. Finally in this course, I completed a group assignment in which I was the primary statistician for the a study Examining the Effect of Self-Compassion and Depressive Symptoms in Black Males: A Moderated Moderation Model.
These artifacts provide evidence of master level competency for the following competency: a, b, d, e, f, g, and h.
In COUC 750 Qualitative Research Methods, I began the process of competency in qualitative research methods. While in this course, I developed my Researcher Identity Memo which details my “why” for being a researcher. Additionally, I provided a Critical analysis and synthesis of Qualitative Research. At the conclusion of the course, I completed a Qualitative Research Proposal using Thematic Analysis which suggested additional research into the experiences and process of intake session and treatment planning for substance abuse counselors in opioid treatment programs.
These artifacts provide evidence of master level competency for the following competency: a, c, d, g, and l.
In COUC 810 Dissemination of Research and Scholarship in Counseling, qualitative research continued to be explored and dissemination of scholarly writing, grant proposals, presentation proposals, and presentations were required. For this course, I completed research on Disordered Eating and created a Disordered Eating PowerPoint Presentation and Handout that were utilized to submit a Disordered Eating Presentation Proposal for the Black Mental Health Conference in Florida. Additionally, Additionally in COUC 810, I was able to extend my understanding of scholarly writing in an academic group of peers. Despite the inability to complete the manuscript due to time limitations, I found this process to be very enlightening. A copy of the unfinished manuscript can be found here: Telehealth Supervision: Systematic Review Manuscript.
These artifacts provide evidence of master level competency for the following competency: h, i, and k.
In COUC 870, I extended my competency in Research and Scholarship and committed to a dissertation topic, created a conceptual model, identified a timeline for research, and connected with my dissertation chair, Dr. Stacey Lilley. In order to keep the details of my dissertation organized I created a Disseration Notebook that details my study and has been very useful for me as a researcher and scholar.
This artifact provides evidence of master level competency for the following competency: a, b, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, and l.
Finally, a reflection of my research and scholarship mastery of competency can be found in the details of this Research Capstone, completed for COUC 999 Research Internship. These artifacts provide evidence of all levels competency.

Research and Scholarship Reflection:
Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?
The process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency has been daunting but rewarding. Entering into the program at Liberty, I was very nervous about the research requirements and I felt concern that I would struggle in this area. After being able to work with Dr. Volk, I found a new appreciation for statistics and research. During the second course I took with Dr. Volk, I had colleagues reaching out to me to help them understand their statistical analyses and it was then that I realized that I had a leadership capacity within research which has been very impactful on my self-image and has impacted me personally and professionally.
Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?
An area of strength that I have developed while in this program in this area of competency is a greater understanding of research analysis. I enjoy reading SPSS output and it has sparked an interest in me for further research. My intention is to use this strength to secure a position in a research facility where I can continue to learn and grow in my depth of understanding of research.
Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?
An area of challenge is my lack of research publications. I plan on connecting with peers and faculty members in the future to seek opportunities for publications and improving this area as I desire to develop excellence in this area.
Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.
Important components of research and scholarship are to have an ethical framework, sense of purpose, moral compass, and humility. These all align with the way that Jesus teaches us to lead and to be. As a result of my unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, I must strive for objectivity, adhere to ethical standards, and maintain an open-minded approach to my work while self-monitoring any confirmation bias.
